Spectacles and Stuff.

I'm getting glasses! Apparently I'm short sighted. And here I thought I moved from the back to the front of the lecture theatre because I was becoming more conscientious.

When I was little I had glasses and had to wear a pirate patch for a while there. Kids can be so cruel. I think the situation improved when I got a pink patch instead of a black one.

Actually, when I think about it, it was kind of cool. I should have just run with it and dressed completely as a pirate, like when I had short hair and the nickname 'Marty' in kinder- I'd wear nothing but dresses so people would know I was a girl.

I'm unaturally excited about getting glasses again. I'm on the search for the perfect frames- the ones that make you look smart and cool.

Something like this could be good:

I'd probably do without the bunny ears though.

P.S. I'm pretty busy with my thesis at the moment and am reducing my hours at work, so my posts may become even more sporadic then they already are. I'm still here, I still care, and when I get a few minutes I'll check out all your lovely blogs. Cheers guys.

Lessons from St Patrick's Day 2006

From the night...

- Just because you can skull pints faster than anyone else doesn't mean that you should.

- Drunken text messages can be dangerous.

- Don't try and keep up with three seasoned drinkers when you only drink occasionally yourself. Especially ones who probably think Boonie's record is something to aspire to.

- It's far easier to find Melbourne's hidden-away laneway bars when you're sober- when you're drunk, all laneways look the same!

- Taxi Drivers have a thankless role. I'd like to take this opportunity to put out a public apology to the guy who drove us home on Friday night who had to put up with a completely irrational shouting match that lasted the entire trip.

From the morning after...

No. Not 'top of the morning' to me at all.

- Hangovers suck.

- And if you drink enough, they last all day.

- You really mean it when you say 'I'm never, ever drinking again!' ... but you always do.

- When you can't remember everything you said or did the night before, people can tell you anything the next day and you have to believe it. The worst part is that most of it is probably true.

- Having to excuse yourself from a phone call to throw up = not cool.

- When feeling sick and sorry for yourself, the fact that you brought it on yourself makes it just that little bit worse.

Ten things on a Thursday

On the games...

1. Despite my best efforts to avoid something as patriotic and sport-related as the Commonwealth Games, it seems there is no escape- you can't even walk to the train station these days without being interrupted by the Baton Relay.

That said, it was kind of cool and surreal- quarter past seven in the morning, only just getting light and suddenly there's this cavalcade of police cars, vans, official-looking vehicles and the odd spectator (it was 7:15am on a weekday) and in the middle of it all a guy dressed in white carrying a big stick.

I didn't even know it was going through my suburb!

Nor did anyone else apparently. As the garbo said to his friend on his mobile: 'Nah, it's not the Queen, it's just the torch!'

2. The transport situation so far doesn't seem any worse than normal. Of course, it does help that our trams can now fly, which clears up the roads considerably:

On blogging...

3. Isn't it funny that even though there is a world-wide 'blogosphere' out there, bloggers tend to congregate around location? I read a lot of blogs from Melbourne; people from Melbourne read my blog. Like-attracts-like I guess.

4. I'm also fascinated by the different 'rules' for various online mediums. Why is it that on Blogger, your readers tend to be people you don't know in real life, while on MySpace, your 'friends' tend to be people you do know?

On fashion...

5. I wanted this type of shoe for ages, but then I realised something- they're clown shoes.*

6. I wish I wasn't influenced by fashion, as it's so... vacuous... but I still am. I live in a city. You can't get to know every person you see. Judgements are made fast. Clothes matter.

On cats...

7.

8.

On guilty pleasures...

9. While I read heaps of highbrow literature for uni**, I secretly really dig self-help books. At the moment I'm reading How to be a Couple & Still be Free. (I can't believe I just told you guys that!)

10. 'Between the Sheets' on the ABC. Love it. Especially how it deals with the sexuality of people of all age groups, not just the young.

Ten things on a Thursday. Please excuse the randomness.

*No offence to anyone who owns these kind of shoes- like I said, I wanted a pair for ages!
**Just made my way through the 500-odd pages of 'V' by Thomas Pynchon. At times I felt like that guy on The Simpsons who has hiccups- 'hik, kill me, hik, kill me...'

Where am I today?

At work...

On Labour Day. With no extra pay despite it being a public holiday. At my workplace that recently won Employer of the Year, even though it has no union. Haven't we come a long way since 1856?

In love...

With the boy. He makes me happy.

Wistful...

For overseas travel. And for owning my own place.

I guess I should pay off my HECS debt first. Sigh.

Absorbed...

In my uni work. Yes, I'm still questioning my abilities as a student; yes, I'm still apprehensive about all the hard work... yet so far, so good.

Happy...

Yep.

Underachiever and proud of it...

How much is your blog worth?

Go on, mock me.

!

Here is the meme Bevis tagged me for oh, a month or two ago. Better late then never right?

1. First blog you ever read?

Like just about everyone else I've seen do this meme, it was Reasons You Will Hate Me. To this day it's one of my favourite blogs, as well as being one of the best and most consistent personal blogs around.

2. What inspired you to start your own?

This girl got married last year and I wanted to post some pictures from the hen's night etc. on the web. It went from there.

It's also a public alternative to the journal I keep at home. I save the juicy stuff for my handwritten journal. (Sorry guys!)

3.The best and worst about blogging?

The best bit is the community aspect of blogging and having a record of the stuff I've been up to. I love reading about other people's daily lives too, especially people on the other side of the world.

The worst aspect is that I feel like my communication/interaction with people is increasingly mediated by technology- text messages, blogs, emails- and that such interaction is somehow less 'real' than face-to-face communication. I love new media, but I'm concerned about how far it will go in the future.

4. Who was the first person to comment on your blog? Troll your archives and find out.

It was this guy. He said 'ciao!'.

5. What has been your most popular blog entry?

Oh, probably a picture of a cat or some such nonsense.

...

Oh no, it turns out a tie between this one and this one with 13 comments each.

6. If I re-named my blog I would call it ...

Susanne's Blog, or: 'Will you excuse me? I cut my foot before and my shoe is filling up with blood'

Naturally, Romy White would be the patron saint of the blog.

7. If my blog had a theme song it would be ...

Bittersweet Bundle of Misery by Graham Coxon.

8. If my blog was a room it would look like ...

It would be colourful, light, have lots of pictures and art on the walls and a big couch with lots of cushions. There would be good coffee and tea and, of course, cheesecake.

9. Five bloggers I would like to have over for dinner.

Russell Allen to stir the pot, both literally and figuratively.

Magical_M, because I think she would be nice in real life.

Chai, because he could review the night here after.

Tracey-Leigh, because a nice dinner might cheer her up after all the stuff she's been going through lately. :)

Deb, because I don't see her enough in real life.

10. Two bloggers you would like to set up on a blind date.

I don't do set-ups.

11. Somebody I wish had a blog?

Woody Allen or Jake Gyllenhaal.

12. If you were only allowed to read one blog ever again, which blog would it be?

Pink is the New Blog, hands down.

13. Is there a fellow blogger you would like to snog / shag / do rude things to? Feel free to name names if you're game.

Yes. No names.

14. Discover a blog. Link to a blog that you have recently found, or a blog you have been reading for a while and haven't blogrolled.

I quite like this one.

Tag five bloggers to complete this meme.

Eh, I'm not in the mood to impose anything on anyone today. Anyone who reads this is most welcome to complete the meme themselves.
