Friday Video Clip of the Week #4 - Girls' Generation 少女時代 in Mr Taxi

I've got three music channels on my television here in Japan and I sometimes find myself mesmerised by the k-pop and j-pop girl groups. So many members! So many midriffs!

Girls' Generation from Korea are one of the better groups I've come across so far. The members all look over 18. The song is catchy and fun.

The j-pop groups seem more extreme - younger girls, more members, highly sexualised. The most extravagant of these is AKB48, which currently has 60 girls in the band, divided into 4 teams. They range in age from 16 up to 25, with trainee members as young as 13.

The AKB48 girls seem almost interchangeable, quite literally in the case of one of the band members Aimi Eguchi - she's a computer generated composite of six other girls in the band.

Japan is a strange place.
