Yesterday was a big day for women. We saw the formidable Wendy Davis filibuster in Texas without breaks for over ten hours against a restrictive abortion bill, which has been blocked for now.
We saw Australia's first female Prime Minister... Julia Gillard handle her exit with the poise, grace and dignity that has marked her three years in office despite the ongoing sexism, misogyny and questions over her 'legitimacy' that she has had to face.
History will be kinder to Julia Gillard than the current media and men in blues ties have.
I may not have agreed with Labor's increasingly restrictive asylum seeker policy or stance against gay marriage, but I am proud of the strength Julia Gillard has shown during her term and saddened by how far Australia has to go to reach gender equality where a female Prime Minister is seen as just as legitimate as a male one.
